HOW TO PAINT BATHROOM OR KITCHEN TILES?
Painting tiles is a very simple task. There's no need to prime or sand ; simply make sure the wall area you're going to paint is thoroughly clean.
Prepare the surface before painting:
If we want the paint to adhere well and not peel off over time, we will have to carefully follow these steps :
First, we must clean and degrease the entire surface, including both the tiles and the grout. We will use soap and water for this task, never cleaning products containing silicone or wax.
While the surface of the tile can be cleaned with any type of sponge or cloth, the grout lines must be cleaned by vigorously scrubbing with a brush. This is because dirt, grease, and mold tend to accumulate most strongly in these areas.
- Finally, we dry the surface well with a clean cloth and it is ready to paint.
Apply the product
In our store we have two products for painting tiles, a one-component product and a two-component polyurethane enamel.
There aren't many differences between the two products, so the choice depends on individual needs. Two-component enamels are known for their hardness and better adhesion to the surface, while one-component paint is thinned with deodorized solvent, making it easier to apply and less pungent than polyurethane thinner.
It is not necessary to apply a primer coat before starting.
If we don't choose the right product, we'll have the problem of it not adhering properly to the tiles, since many are not porous and prevent the paint from bonding to the ceramic. (After a while, these paints will crack, peel, or fall off.)
Firstly, regarding single-component tile paint:
- We will shake the product to homogenize it.
- The dilution will be done with a deodorized solvent , which has almost no odor.
For 2C polyurethane enamel for tiles :
- To begin, it is necessary to vigorously mix the two components of the paint set.
- We will let it rest for about five minutes and dilute the mixture with polyurethane solvent (especially the first coat, as it is the most important for anchoring to the substrate).
-Stir the product before starting. This way, we will be mixing the paint pigments well and achieving the right shade.
A word of advice: polyurethane tile paint is especially strong, so it's advisable to ventilate at all times.
The application should be done with a compact foam roller. This will ensure immediate adhesion of the enamel, but it can also be applied with a brush, roller, or airless sprayer.
It is recommended to apply two coats of paint if you want to completely cover the previous color or any patterns and achieve a uniform finish. Although the paint may appear dry after two hours, it is best to leave it for approximately six hours before applying the next coat.
A trick to avoid ruining our bathroom or kitchen is to test it on a tile that is somewhat hidden so that, if we don't like it, we can fix it without the slightest problem.
